Peace is my mission – to celebrate women in peacekeeping around the world

UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security recognizes the important role that women play in preventing and resolving conflict, as well as in peace negotiations, peacebuilding, peacekeeping, humanitarian response, as well as in post-conflict reconstruction.

The resolution calls on all actors to increase women’s participation and include gender perspectives in all UN and security efforts. It also calls on all parties to a conflict to take special measures to protect women and girls from gender-based violence, especially rape and other forms of sexual abuse, in situations of armed conflict.

In the twenty years since the resolution was adopted, the UN has worked hard to enable women to participate more effectively in conflict prevention, mediation and resolution. Gender advisors and gender focal points in peacekeeping and political missions around the world help advance the goals of Resolution 1365. Not only do they advise the leadership of these missions on issues of gender equality, women, peace and security, but they also work with local civil society organizations to ensure the inclusion of women in peace and political processes.

To honor two decades of advocacy, “Peace is my mission” women are profiled in UN peacekeeping missions and special political missions that push them toward a peaceful world:

Fatima Khamis from Sudan

As a network engineer for the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), Ms Fatima Khamis has broken down cultural barriers to success in a field where women are under-represented.

Fiona Beine from Uganda

The work in Iraq as the Deputy Security Adviser to the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) has me. Fiona Beine’s preconceived notions of working in a conflict zone change.
