This week, countries celebrating World Diabetes Day will celebrate. Although the planet is rightly spreading Covid-19, we must not overlook the need to respond to other more preventable causes of disease and death.

Worldwide, an estimated 422 million adults lived with diabetes in 2014, compared to 108 million in 1980. Over the past decade, the incidence of diabetes has risen faster in low- and middle-income countries than in higher-income countries.

In 2007, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 61/225, which designated November 14 as World Diabetes Day. The resolution recognizes “the urgent need to pursue multilateral efforts to promote and improve human health and to provide access to treatment and health education”.

Nurses are currently responsible for more than half of the global health professionals and the theme for World Diabetes Day is The Nurse and Diabetes. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the important role that nurses play in supporting people with diabetes.

As the pandemic shows no signs of slowing down, and diabetes is on the rise, universal national health care is essential.
