Former Senate President Bernard Makuza has been appointed by the African Union (AU) as head of the AU’s Election Observation Commission during the Burkina Faso general election.
The election is scheduled for November 22.
“Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chair of the African Union Commission, I am very honored by the trust you place in me by appointing me as Head of the Election Observation Mission in BURKINA FASO. It is with humility that I accept to my contribution with the deployed delegation, ”Makuza said in a tweet.
Makuza is also a former prime minister.
The observation delegation consists of between 25 and 30 observers from different countries, including former politicians, political experts, members of civic organizations and academics.
Makuza told The New Times on Tuesday, November 17, that the appointment is proud of the country.
“I thank our leadership for giving me the opportunity to serve the country in various dockings, which is the reason for the recent appointment. It also shows how confident the AU is in our country,” he said. .
Thirteen candidates, including incumbent President Roch Marc Christian Kabore, are vying to run Burkina Faso’s leadership.
In September, MPs passed a law that could confirm the election results, even if there is no voting across the country.
The Constitutional Council of the West African country also recently noted that voting will not take place in almost a fifth of the country’s territory due to the presence of terrorist groups and the absence of administrative officials in the areas, which according to them by residents has been let down. .
Among the duties of election observers are the deterrence of fraud, the exposure of problems and irregularities, the provision of accurate criteria for the quality of the election and recommendations to improve the process for the next election.
Makuza was President of the Senate of Rwanda from 14 October 2014 to 17 October 2019 and before that he was Prime Minister from 8 March 2000 to 6 October 2011.
