Lesotho stumbles against Benin

Lesotho’s chances of a first African Cup final ever are almost over after they failed to score a second match against Benin.

The goalless draw on Tuesday in Maseru leaves Likuena down in Group L who have to win their last two matches at home in Sierra Leone in March and away to mighty Nigeria to get any chance to qualify.

They had two good head chances in Tuesday’s game but saw Motebang Sera miss the target with the first in a rare opportunity and captain Nkau Lerotholi come even closer.

But the match offers no clear chance for either side. Benin now sits second in the standings, one point behind Nigeria, who were drawn 0-0 in Sierra Leone later on Tuesday.

Lesotho were hit by an outbreak of COVID-19 in their camp ahead of Saturday’s game in Porto Novo. Three players and two officials had to stay behind in the kingdom after testing positive.
