‘Maradona’s death a sad day for the football world’ – President Weah

(Monrovia, Liberia): The President of the Republic, HE dr. George Manneh Weah, mourns the death of football legend Diego Maradona, who allegedly died of a heart attack on Wednesday 25 November 2020. The Liberian leader described the loss of Maradona as a ‘very sad day for the football world’.

He expressed deep sympathy with the icon’s family, the residents of Argentina and ‘all lovers of the beautiful game’. The president presented the extraordinary story of Diego Maradona, who he said as a child ‘turned himself off from poverty’ and used his ‘mastery of football to inspire millions’.

The Liberian leader, who himself was a former football legend who received much praise, including the coveted Ballon D’or as World and European Footballer of the Year, was also influenced by the Maradona story during its heyday. But despite his own achievements, he was amazed at the achievements of the Argentine megastar.

In addition to playing for his country’s national team, Maradona has also become popular with popular European clubs, such as Barcelona and Napoli. His passing has created a huge void for world football.
