Tunisia: Saied Tells Mechichi Not to Give in to Blackmail in Cabinet Reshuffle

Tunis/Tunisia — President of the Republic Kais Saied met Saturday in Carthage with Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi.

The meeting focused on ongoing cabinet reshuffle talks. The President laid emphasis on the “imperative not to give in to whatever form of blackmail.”

“It was agreed that the cabinet will be made up of members whose integrity is beyond doubt,” the Presidency said in a press release..

“There is no way that people involved in legal proceedings – even if no decision was taken yet- will be nominated,” the President added. “Senior officials must not be subject of suspicion or have legal proceedings initiated against them.”

The Premier dismissed three ministers over the last three months. They are the interior Minister (January 5), the minister of local affairs and environment (December 20) and the minister of cultural affairs (October 5).

Spoliated funds also took centre stage. Emphasis was put on the need to speed up the process for their recovery so as not to fall behind schedule.

The epidemiological situation and the need to provide COVID-19 vaccines as soon as possible were also discussed.

“Speed and effectiveness need to be the sole criteria in choosing the vaccine,” Kais Saied said .
