Tunisia: Jerandi Attends Meeting of Foreign Ministers of Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS in Rome

Tunis/Tunisia — Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad Othman Jerandi underlined during his participation in the meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS held Monday in Rome, the importance of embedding the Coalition’s action in a global multilateral approach involving governments, organisations and the civil society.

The aim, according to him, is to enhance the preventive approach by tackling the factors conducive to the emergence of terrorism, radicalisation and violent extremism.

Quoted in a Foreign Affairs Department press release, Jerandi explained that preventing the phenomenon of terrorism requires a comprehensive concept of sustainable development, strengthening countries’ capacities to overcome poverty, ensuring social integration and combating the marginalisation of large groups of the population.

Jerandi also pointed out the need to adapt ways to combat terrorism to digital and technological progress, especially as terrorists use virtual space and social networks to recruit young people and raise funds.

Although Daesh is almost defeated in Syria and Iraq, it continues to pose a threat to countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, he added.

He called in this regard, for boosting regional and international cooperation to put an end to conflicts and establish a climate of stability in crisis areas, reaffirming Tunisia’s commitment to do its utmost to combat terrorism, radicalisation and violent extremism and consolidate human values.
