Ghana: Adisco Old Students Donate to Apinto Govt Hospital

Tarkwa — The 1994 Year Group of Adisadel College (ADISCO), in Cape Coast, has donated a set of furniture to the Apinto Government Hospital in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem municipality of the Western Region.

The gesture was in honour of their classmate and class captain, now Member of Parliament for Tarkwa-Nsuaem, Mr George Mireku Duker.

It is aimed at helping him improve service delivery and health care at the Out- Patient Department (OPD) of the hospital.

Donating the items on behalf of his mates on Sunday, Mr Duker noted that the Apinto Hospital, the first government hospital in Ghana built in 1881, was faced with huge challenges as it struggles to ensure quality and good health services.

He explained that, when the 1994 year group decided to honour him as a Member of Parliament and also a Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, he requested the furniture for the hospital and was grateful that his mates had honored their pledge.

“You will realise that Apinto is an old hospital and faces numerous challenges. That’s why our group came with the furniture. They have decided to adopt the Apinto Hospital and, so, there will be more of such gestures.

Government cannot do it alone; Anglogold Ashanti, Iduapriem Mine and Gold Fields are also doing their part, and, together we will continue to lobby for Apinto to get good things to deliver on its mandate”, Mr Duker said.

The Hospital Administrator, Habib Ganiyu, mentioned that the Accident and Emergency Unit had only five beds, and that with the increase in population it was difficult for the facility to handle critical cases.

He therefore, appealed to philanthropist, corporate organisations, and individuals to assist the hospital with more beds to enable the staff offer excellent health care to the community.

“We also need Neonatal Intensive Unit to provide critical services to new babies, especially premature babies after delivery.

Again, accommodation for staff is also a challenge to health delivery at the Apinto Hospital,” Mr Ganiyu added.

Abel Aryeetey, leader of the 1994 ADISCO year group, hoped that the hospital management would take good care of the furniture to encourage members to donate more items to the facility in future.
