Venezuelan Government Appoint Diplomat Alex Saab for the Negotiations Held in Mexico City on September 24 and 27, 2021

In view of the third round of negotiations to be held in Mexico City on September 24 and 27, 2021, Alex Saab has been appointed by the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to be part of the delegation representing the interests of the Government of Venezuela.

Although he is still being held by Cape Verde, in an arbitrary manner and in violation of diplomatic immunity, with a view to his extradition for political purposes to the United States of America, his effective participation in the negotiations as a representative of the government of Venezuela is considered essential and fundamental.

From a technical point of view, it is his know-how, his long experience in the field, his detailed knowledge of political issues and his ability to negotiate that fully justify this choice. From a political point of view, the Venezuelan government reiterates its full confidence in Alex Saab, and its unfailing support.

Finally, from a symbolic and pragmatic point of view, the effective participation of Alex Saab in these negotiations would mark the willingness of all parties and external observers to open up to dialogue and to explore sustainable solutions in order to restore the full enjoyment of economic, social and cultural rights in Venezuela and to meet the most basic humanitarian needs. This was already the thematic mandate of Alex Saab as a special envoy, especially during his illegitimate arrest by Cape Verde during a technical transit on June 12, 2020.
