Tunisia: Security Forces Block All Access to Avenue Habib Bourguiba

Tunis/Tunisia — The security forces have barricaded, Sunday, the day of commemoration of the 64th anniversary of the Republic, all access to Avenue Habib Bourguiba, while calls have been made to descend in large numbers into the streets and express fed up with the general situation of the country and the system in place.

In front of a security checkpoint set up at the entrance to the Medina, dozens of protesters have vainly tried to access the avenue. They showed their anger at this massive security device that prohibits them from demonstrating on this day of celebration of the Republic Day, Avenue Habib Bourguiba, the artery emblematic of the Revolution.

In a statement granted to TAP correspondent, Wahiba Charaa, speaking on behalf of the demonstrators described as unacceptable these measures that prohibit citizens to celebrate Republic Day and express their dissatisfaction with the general situation of the country.

For his part, an engineer living abroad, aged 55 years and who preferred to remain anonymous said that the Tunisians took to the streets today to express their anger at the failure of the current government.

“The system in place is corrupt. Only promises in the air! Our young people are dying at sea every day, trying to cross to Europe. We have lost all dignity in this country,” lamented another young demonstrator.

Several movements hostile to the government and the Ennahda movement have been observed, simultaneously in several regions of the Republic. These movements are held in a delicate health context marked by the increase, since last June, of the number of infections by the coronavirus.
