Tunis/Tunisia — Secretary-General of the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT), Noureddine Tabboubi, called Sunday for “positive pressure to review some national choices and achieve the claims of the revolution of freedom and dignity.
In a statement to the press after a ceremony held at the Square of Martyrs at the Jellaz cemetery, to commemorate the eighth anniversary of the assassination of former member of the National Constituent Assembly, Mohammad Brahmi, Taboubi stressed that “the UGTT is not in a position, because of the pandemic Coronavirus to act intensively.
He added “the time is over, and we can no longer wait. This is not a threat, but a positive pressure to adjust the compass.
The UGTT had proposed for months to hold a national dialogue to overcome the governmental and political paralysis that dates back to December 2020 after the announcement by Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi of a cabinet reshuffle approved by Parliament, but refused by the President of the Republic because of suspicions of corruption and conflicts of interest that weigh on some ministers.
According to Taboubi, “the institutions of the state in Tunisia are failing and distant from each other. He has, in this regard, criticised the publication of official government correspondence on the pages of social media as well as the rush and race to take pictures on the occasion of the granting of symbolic aid to cope with the crisis of the Coronavirus”, adding “This is not the way to govern a country.
Tunisia has recently received aid from brotherly and friendly countries, consisting of vaccines, medical equipment, field hospitals and quantities of oxygen and arrived by air and sea.
“The crisis that Tunisia is currently experiencing is not the result of chance and is an accumulation of several years after the revolution,” added the Secretary-General of the UGTT, stressing that the UGTT which “respects the choices and the will of voters”, considers elected officials as “guarantors of health and food security of their constituents, and are called to improve their conditions.
At the beginning of his statement to the media, Taboubi praised the qualities of Mohamed Brahmi, who was assassinated in front of his house on July 25, 2013. The deceased was a member of the National Constituent Assembly and leader of the popular current after leaving the Popular Front Party.
Taboubi stressed the need and reveal the whole truth about the political assassinations that took place in Tunisia including that of Mohamed Brahmi.
